Mario Mercado of BATS-TOI Answers Four Questions for Founders
BATS-TOI is a sports technology company that is engineering a connected smart multisport helmet with an integrated communication system.
1. Why did you start BATS-TOI? Do you remember the moment when you first thought of the idea?
The concept of BATS-TOI first as my graduate school research project that began at NYU and I continued developing the concept when I transferred to Columbia University. I started the company because I saw a need to develop a sports helmet as the ultimate wearable device for safety, data, communication, and engagement.
2. How do you see BATS-TOI impacting how we live our lives?
I see BATS-TOI impacting how we live our lives by creating a connected community supported with a platform for engagement centered around sports.
3. How has New York and Newlab positively impacted the development of your business?
New York has positively impacted the development of BATS-TOI by providing us access to a robust collaborative and active startup community. Newlab’s impact on BATS-TOI cannot be overstated. Newlab has provided us with an enormous amount of resources to develop, grow, and scale. The access to product development facilities, workshops, opportunities to connect and collaborate with other tech startups, and well as creating an overall supportive environment makes our journey taken with more confidence.
4. What do you see as your responsibility to make technology ethical and accessible to all?
I see my responsibility is to a) ensure to the best of my company’s ability to protect any personal data and information of our consumers, b) not provide a platform for hateful speech or content, and c) that diversity in sex, gender and ethnicity is represented without bias or discrimination.
