Newlab’s Venture Studio builds new companies in partnership with experienced founders and domain experts who have a distinct capacity to lead. Newlab leverages its infrastructure, team, and industry network to create resilient, impactful, and scalable businesses. This year, in response to COVID-19, Newlab launched two ventures to address the challenges brought about by the pandemic.
Applied XL
Launched in 2019, Applied XL is a data science company tracking the health of people, places, and the planet. It develops real-time information systems powered by machine learning and natural language algorithms calibrated by expert networks.
Early in 2020, Applied XL partnered with leading health publication STAT, the Center on Rural Innovation, and Narrativa to develop the COVID-19 and County Preparedness Index. The platform, which aggregates comprehensive data on COVID-19 cases globally and assesses every U.S. county’s preparedness to address the pandemic, was named a finalist in the Social Good category of Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards and received an honorable mention in the Health category. In addition, Applied XL and STAT News won the EPPY Award for best use of data and infographics.

Spiro Devices
In March 2020, while New York City was bracing for a catastrophic ventilator shortage due to COVID-19, Newlab, 10xBeta, and Boyce Technologies rapidly mobilized an effort to redesign, prototype, and test a bridge ventilator that had previously been developed to a preliminary stage by MIT in 2010.
In under one month, Spiro Devices developed, began manufacturing, and received FDA Emergency Use Authorization for the Spiro Wave emergency bridge ventilator. Spiro Wave is currently being manufactured for NYC COVID-19 Emergency Services, in coordination with the New York City Economic Development Corporation, to ensure that Spiro Wave Devices are distributed to hospitals in NYC.
Spiro Wave was named as a finalist in the Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards in the General Excellence and Health categories.
