ABOUT THE ROLE

Newlab is seeking a Design Strategist to grow its Product Design capabilities for Newlab’s Innovation Studios. Reporting to a Product Design Director, the Design Strategist will be responsible for conducting design research, identifying and communicating strategic opportunities and product solutions, and facilitating stakeholder collaboration across Newlab’s programs portfolio. This person will be tasked with execution across multiple Innovation Studios. The Design Strategist will draw upon human-centered design methodologies to guide Studios towards success and support startup participants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Research and Strategy: Conduct fieldwork and user interviews and stakeholder interviews to highlight and frame opportunities for frontier technologies, and work with Research Analysts to build an ecosystem level understanding  of companies, experts, research and investment relevant to a specific sector or industry.
  • Visualize opportunities: Convey concise narrative stories using visual frameworks and scenario building to illustrate opportunities within industry and civic focus areas that can leverage frontier tech. 
  • Execute Workshops and Collaboration: Use design-thinking methodologies to design and execute virtual and in-person workshops, brainstorms and impromptu working sessions throughout the Studio process. 
  • Support Startups and New Ventures: Guide and support startups through the process of building and piloting their solutions. Design roadmaps for startups to develop prototypes and execute pilots that connect to the known challenges and big picture opportunities within a Studio. This methodology will also be applied to new venture companies being launched by Newlab through close collaboration with founders.

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience working in a design consultancy or as part of an in-house design and innovation group 
  • Background in Industrial Design, Interaction Design or Design Research and Strategy 
  • Experience with systems-thinking design challenges that include collaborating with technical teams, i.e. engineers and technologists
  • Strong track record of delivering engaging and thoughtful work to clients or in-house senior leadership.
  • Familiarity with Google’s business tools (docs, team drives, slides, sheets etc), as well as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Experience with UI/UX software such as Figma and Sketch or CAD software such as Solidworks or Rhinoceros is a plus.

  • Curiosity and comfort working with frontier technologies including robotics, A.I, urban technology and connected systems, to solve “tough tech” challenges in categories including energy, transportation, manufacturing and agriculture.
