Since launching The Circular City program in May 2018, Newlab has served as a unique neutral platform to catalyze partnerships that explore the role of data in the future of cities.

In March 2019, Newlab hosted a Public Showcase to reveal the data that’s been collected and studied in this special sandbox environment and to release The Circular City Research Journal. The publication, edited by André Corrêa d’Almeida of Columbia University and ARCx – Applied Research for Change, explores the ways shared data can help public and private sectors alike in addressing urban challenges. Contributors include:

  • Nilda MesaCenter for Sustainable Urban Development, Columbia University
  • Arnaud SahuguetCornell Tech
  • Stefaan G. VerhulstThe Governance Lab, New York University
  • Andrew Young, The Governance Lab, New York University
  • Andrew J. ZahuranecThe Governance Lab, New York University
  • Caroline McHeffeyMPA in Development Practice program, Columbia University

The program has worked closely with the NYCEDC and Downtown Brooklyn Partnership to deploy technology from three Newlab member startups: CARMERACitiesense, and Numina. The partners have collected and shared data designed to help solve challenges facing Downtown Brooklyn, a booming neighborhood that has seen 31% growth in residents and 26% job growth since 2010, making it the perfect testing ground for new technologies designed to address the needs of a growing city.

The tech pilots combined with the bespoke research introduce a new paradigm for considering the value of data for our rapidly changing urban environments. The Circular City Research Journal is a resource that includes valuable learnings and recommendations for startups, city agencies, enterprises and local advocates looking to harness data in meaningful ways.
