Maria Aiolova is an educator, architect and urban designer in New York City. She is a Co-Founder of Terreform ONE. In 2013, Maria was appointed Academic Director of Global Architecture and Design of CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange), and recently won the AIA NY Award for Urban Design.
Maria is a visiting faculty at University of Applied Arts Vienna. Most recently, she taught at
Pratt Institute and Parsons the New School for Design, and has also been a visiting lecturer and critic at Harvard GSD, Columbia University, Cornell University, CUNY, Washington University, The Cooper Union, University of Toronto and Rhode Island School of Design. She formerly served as Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of ETEX Corporation, a bio-tech company in Cambridge, MA.
Maria is an inventor who holds 18 technology patents. In 2011, she was the winner of the Victor J. Papanek Social Design Award sponsored by the University of Applied Arts Vienna, the Austrian Cultural Forum, and the Museum of Arts and Design. She has also won a number of other design competitions including first place in the CHARLES/MGH Station, Boston; the Izmir Post District International Competition, Turkey; the Zumtobel Group Award for Sustainability and Humanity; and the Build Boston Award.
CEO, Within Lab
Dr Siavash Mahdavi is the Managing Director of Within Technologies and the CTO of Digital Forming. Siavash studied Mechatronics Engineering at King's College London. He followed on to study a M.Sc. in Intelligent Systems at University College London and continued his research to complete a doctorate in Evolutionary robotics.
With support from UCL Business, Mahdavi started Complex Matters Ltd in 2005, a design consultancy that worked with designers and engineers in creating objects with optimised structures that enable them to exhibited unparalleled material properties.
He moved on to establish Within Technologies, a design consultancy and software house specializing in utilizing Additive Manufacturing for higher-end engineering applications such as the Medical, Aerospace, Formula1 and Footwear industries. He also co-founded Digital Forming, a company that is making use of 3D printing to enable the mass customization of consumer products for high-street brands. Both companies were featured in the Economist in a cover story entitled The manufacturing technology that will change the world.
